Description
Supplementary information for the paper "The illusion of infinity: Acoustic black holes in wood deceive termites". The folder contains figures, data analysis and visualisation of the results.
Data Caption
Figure S1. Termite collection and colony preparation. (A) Selection and marking of a Coptotermes acinaciformis mound; (B) removal of the outer shell; (C) placement of inner mound sections onto tarps for collection; (D) weighing of isolated workers and soldiers following processing steps (see Supplementary Information); (E) introduction of termites into a surrogate nest jar containing a food and building material matrix; (F) storage in environmental cabinets following air freight transport, until the colony is ready for experimentation (approximately two weeks later, matrix changed to brown color).
Figure S2. Experimental design and bioassay setup. (A) Lid design featuring an acoustic black hole (ABH) termination and a flat termination used as a local control; (B) magnified view of the brass connector showing 0.5 mm diameter breathing holes; (C) arrangement of experimental jars on a holding tray; (D) jars positioned upright within an environmental cabinet for controlled incubation.
Movie S3. Elastic wave simulation of dowels. Pressure time-history (0 - 0.3 ms) of the 19 mm-diameter short (40 mm), long (160 mm), and ABH (160 mm) Pinus radiata dowels (modelled as bulk orthotropic material) in response to a pulse excitation (P = 1 Pa) that is uniformly distributed across the dowel end exposed to the termite feeding site.
