DescriptionThe exploration of digital design techniques has been at the forefront of design making worldwide. The growth of digital engineering design in China, applying traditional materials such as bamboo is growing considerably. To understand the possibilities of bamboo as a material and contemporary design methodologies, a group of 16 students from UWA will travel to China for two 1/2 weeks. During this time, they will work collaboratively with a select group of Product Design and Architecture Chinese students from The University of Nottingham Ningbo China.
Students will engage in lectures and visits in urban and rural locations, (Shanghai, Longquan, Hangzhou and surroundings). They will observe design processes, fabrication and small constructions in bamboo, using traditional weaving and contemporary design processes. Students will be accommodated for half of the period at UNNC campus and will attend workshops culminating with the development of an installation/exhibition using bamboo generated by traditional and digital methods. Staff involved on this programme are from TU Delf Netherlands, UNNC (China) and UWA. Before and after the workshop in China students will be expected to work in Perth, intensively to complete this unit in (4 1/2 weeks).
