A TUMBLING asteroid the size of a bus has zipped to within 12,300km of Australia - closer to the planet than some satellites, NASA says.

The Near Earth Asteroid 2011 MD was picked up by the University of Western Australia’s Zadko Telescope and tracked for 40 minutes above Australian skies as it made a hairpin turn around the planet on Monday night.
