Title Perth researchers to investigate why so many children are misdiagnosed with antibiotic allergies Degree of recognition Local Media name/outlet ABC Radio Perth Media type Radio Duration/Length/Size 09:07 Country/Territory Australia Date 26/04/17 Description Immunologists at Princess Margaret Hospital will investigate why so many children are misdiagnosed with having an antibiotic allergy.
It’s believed as many as 95 percent of children who’ve been told by doctors that they are allergic to antibiotics probably aren’t.
Currently, one in six children who have an operation at PMH are told they are allergic to antibiotics without any formal testing.
Professor Michaela Lucas, a clinical immunologist at PMH and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, says misdiagnosing this kind of allergy can have serious repercussions including poor clinical outcomes, increased antibiotic resistance and prolonged hospital stays.
She is talking to Geoff Hutchison on Perth Mornings.
