Description
We typically think of ‘allies’ of LGBTQIA+ people as those from outside the community – people who are not themselves LGBTQIA+, but are supportive of LGBTQIA+ people. Allies from outside the LGBTQIA+ community are welcome, and their support is valued and important. But those of us within the LGBTQIA+ community can (and should) also think of ourselves as allies to each identity group within our community. There is much we can do as ‘internal allies’ to support and advocate for other LGBTQIA+ people. In his keynote address, Aidan reflects on his own experience of advocacy (through research and teaching) supporting other identities within the LGBTQIA+ community. Drawing on his empirical research, Aidan then suggests some ways that all of us – be we LGBTQIA+ or not – can act as allies to make our educational environments and workplaces more accepting of all LGBTQIA+ identities.Period | 15 Sept 2022 |
