Description

What do we mean when we talk about ‘progress’, and is it always a good thing? In this lecture I will look at a selection of authors who have thought about how modern life in the Western world has made us richer, healthier and more comfortable, but also more lonely and anxious. How can a reading of Henry David Thoreau's Walden lead us out of some of the dead ends of contemporary civilisation?

The lecture is presented by Dr. Thomas Wilson and supported by the University of The Third Age (U3A).
