Packer Modelling (Inflatable Packers International)

Activity: Industry and government engagement/consultancyConsultancy/collaboration

The aim was to design industrial packers used in the oil industry and elsewhere. These `packers' are (normally large) hand wound (therefore expensive) wire reinforced rubber tubes that are used to isolate out sections of an oil pipeline. Under inflation they expand to double their diameter. They need to have wire strength but rubber expandability and so are difficult to design.
