Description
There was significant public engagement and media exposure regarding the oceanographic cruise I led to the southwest Australian submarine canyons during Jan-Feb 2020. The following is an outline of events prior to, during, and post-cruise, which includes coverage of the expedition highlights through interviews by me and some members of my science crew.•Prior to the cruise, I attended the Welcome to Country for the RV Falkor in Sydney, Australia, (7 January, 2020), organised by the Australian Maritime Museum and Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI). Provided slide presentation to special guests, and interviewed by Channel 9 News.
•During the cruise (26 January to 26 February, 2020), international outreach including onboard footage, interviews, regular blogs (13), and short films, were posted on the SOI’s website, which attracted 23,394 users from 161 countries, and 33,736 sessions with 73,163 page views during the cruise. Blogs and video clips were also posted on Facebook as well as Facebook live streams of dives, totalling 104,987 video views. The ship-to-shore program covered 11 direct video links with educational institutions in Italy, Poland, and both primary and high schools in the United States and Australia.
•Press coverage of the expedition by conventional local and national (ABC, GWN7, Channel 9) as wells as numerous online international news platforms, has led to 23 news articles and broadcasts. Interviews were also given to NHK, the Japanese national filmmaker for a documentary production.
