Member of the IEEE History Committee

The History Committee, a committee of the IEEE Board of Directors, is responsible for promoting the collection, writing, and dissemination of historical information in the fields covered by IEEE technical and professional activities, as well as historical information about IEEE and its predecessor organizations. It provides assistance to all major organizational units, works with institutions of a public nature such as the Smithsonian Institution when helpful information is requested and can be secured, and provides information and recommendations to the IEEE Board of Directors when appropriate. The History Committee members will also review nominations for IEEE Milestones, books submitted for the J&W Middleton Electrical Engineering History Award, and scholarship applications.

One or two face-to-face meetings, plus teleconferences as needed. The first meeting of the year is generally early March, at or near Newark Airport, NJ, U.S.A. The second is usually late September or early October, and is often held in conjunction with either HISTELCON or the Annual Meeting of the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), especially in those years when SHOT meets in the U.S.A.

Agenda deadlines are typically approximately two weeks ahead of the meeting or teleconference date. Agendas are emailed approximately one and half weeks in advance of meetings and teleconferences.

Travel expenses for full (voting) members of the History Committee are reimbursed. Corresponding members are welcome to attend meetings at their own or their IEEE organizational unit’s expense but are not reimbursed for travel expenses. Corresponding Members are: former History Committee voting members, Region/Society/Section History Chairs, History Coordinators and similar positions, Milestone proposers, and liaisons with other historical entities.
