Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to extend the empirical evidence in the area of mental toughness development and intervention programs, specifically in an Australian football environment, with a focus on behavioural dimensions. I explored observable mentally tough behaviours (MTb) from the perspective of experienced informants and athletes across training, competition, and development contexts, identified a means by which to assess these MTb, and evaluated the association between MTb and performance. I then tested the effectiveness of a season long coach education program using a novel approach to enhancing sporting performance through the utility of an established behavioural coaching model.
