Teaching

Geoff’s experience in course development and teaching at all levels of education includes teaching general biochemistry and molecular biology courses, through to supervising studies towards higher degrees. When at University College of London post-graduate degrees have to-date been awarded to 47 students (four MDs, five MSc’s, 38 PhDs). He has written and established undergraduate courses in general biochemistry and organized many international meetings. Currently at CCTRM Geoff is a joint coordinating supervisor for one PhD student.

Funding Received

• Professor Laurent has raised over $5,000,000 to support the development of the Centre for Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine.

• When at University College London in the United Kingdom (that is prior to June 2012) - Professor Laurent had grants from British government, charities and industries totalling £10,839,895 million This includes awards from the Medical Research Council of £2,853,270), the Wellcome Trust (awards including a Programme Grant) of £1,869,122 and over £6 million from industry and smaller charities.

Roles, responsibilities and expertise

Prior to his appointment at the University of Western Australia in June 2012 he was the Vice-Dean of Enterprise and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at University College London. Geoff has published over 300 peer reviewed articles in international journals of biomedical research and was awarded the European Respiratory Societies Presidential Award for his contribution to lung science. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and has edited several books including a four volume Encyclopaedia of Respiratory Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Past President of the British Association for Lung Research.

Biography

Professor Geoffrey Laurent is the Director of the Centre for Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Western Australia and an Honorary Fellow at University College London.
